Program Overview

The Pharmaceutical Non-Sterile Compounding Certificate Program provides knowledge and insight into the most recent developments in pharmaceutical compounding practices. Students will learn compounding techniques, regulatory framework (USP<795>), effectiveness of medicinal products, and current compounding methodologies.

The program focuses on topics delivered through two modules:
Designed to provide focused and basic relevant training for compounding. With specialization required to excel in the field of compounding, learners will develop organizational skills required for preparing custom formulation. Students will gain significant knowledge of roles within a compounding Pharmacy under Law and regulations set forth by OCP(Ontario college of Pharmacists).

Course Description:

This five-day intensive training course provides comprehensive and practical knowledge of pharmaceutical compounding, focusing on the latest industry standards and regulations. Designed for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and compounding professionals, this course aims to enhance participants’ practical expertise in compounding techniques and equip them with the necessary skills to ensure patient safety, adherence to regulatory guidelines, USP <795>, and optimal therapeutic outcomes.

Course Objectives:

Understand the Legal and Regulatory Framework for Nonsterile Compounding : Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the legal and regulatory requirements governing nonsterile compounding practices. Topics covered include compliance with USP795 guidelines, state regulations, and best practices for maintaining quality and safety.

Introduction to Compounding Techniques: This module introduces participants to various compounding techniques, including calculations, weighing, measuring, and mixing. Participants will learn the fundamentals of compounding equipment, compounding bases, and techniques for manipulating ingredients effectively.

Comprehend NAPRA Standards for Non-Sterile Compounding: Participants will explore the standards set forth by the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) for non-sterile compounding. This module focuses on adhering to these standards to ensure the highest level of quality and patient care.

Compounding for Specific Therapeutic Areas: This segment of the course delves into compounding for specific therapeutic areas, such as pediatrics, geriatrics, pain management, dermatology, and hormone replacement therapy. Participants will learn formulation techniques, dosing considerations, and compounding challenges specific to each therapeutic area.

Testing and Verification of Compounded Formulations: Participants will explore methods for testing and verifying compounded formulations to ensure accuracy, potency, and consistency. This module covers quality control measures, stability testing, documentation, and record-keeping protocols.

Pharmaceutical Calculations and Measurements for Special Populations: This module focuses on pharmaceutical calculations and measurements tailored to special populations, including pediatric, geriatric, and patients with unique needs. Participants will develop skills in dose adjustments, compounding calculations, and understanding pharmacokinetic principles.

Drug Stability and Compatibility: Understanding drug stability and compatibility is essential for maintaining the integrity and effectiveness of compounded formulations. Participants will learn about factors influencing stability, proper storage conditions, compatibility issues, and techniques to enhance formulation shelf life.

Patient Safety and Risk Management: Patient safety is paramount in compounding practices. This module emphasizes strategies to mitigate risks associated with compounding, including error prevention, proper labeling, cross-contamination prevention, and compliance with safety protocols.

Through a combination of interactive lectures, hands-on demonstrations, case studies, and practical exercises, participants will acquire the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to excel in the field of pharmaceutical compounding. By the end of this intensive training course, participants will be equipped with the latest industry insights, regulatory awareness including significant knowledge of roles within a compounding Pharmacy set forth by OCP(Ontario college of Pharmacists), and practical techniques to ensure the highest standards of compounding practice and patient safety.
