Employer Responsibilities
To maximize the benefit of a Co-op work term, an employer will be expected to provide:
- Employment that is related to the student's field of study
- Accurate, informative job descriptions
- An orientation to familiarize the incoming student with the employer's situation and expectations
- Supervision of students by individuals who understand and are interested in co-op
- An exit interview to discuss the student's performance and future plans
Co op facts
Co-op students require shorter training periods than might be anticipated for two reasons:
- Cooperative programs provide students with specific job skills prior to their work terms.
- Co-op students are motivated, eager to learn, and make a productive contribution to their employees.
Admission to the CO OP programs
Admission to the co-op portion of the program will be determined by factors such as academic performance and perceived suitability for the program. The latter will be determined through an interview process and committee review of résumés and references. Students must have completed the four terms and be eligible to work legally in Canada. AAPS will provide assistance to students for finding a suitable placement position.
The co-op portion of the program will be graded on a pass/fail basis and must be successfully completed to earn the co-operative education credential. Assessments will consist of employer reports, academic supervisor’s site reports, and work term reports completed by students. Students are not normally permitted an opportunity to repeat Work Experience courses. A student whom is not successful will not be permitted to continue in the co-op route, but will be eligible to continue and/or complete the regular academic program.
